Solar technology refers to the use of solar energy to generate electricity (photovoltaic) or heat (solar thermal). Photovoltaic systems convert sunlight directly into electrical energy, while solar thermal systems use solar heat for heating or hot water.
A photovoltaic system converts sunlight into electrical energy. Solar cells, usually made of silicon, absorb photons (light particles), which generates a flow of electrons and thus produces electricity. An inverter converts the direct current generated into alternating current suitable for domestic use.
